FIRST EDITION. Large octavo. xxviii, 202 pp. 105 photographic plates, many full-page, with captions facing. Publishers’ blue cloth with gilt titles to spine and upper board. T.e.g. Cover cloth lightly scuffed with small bump at foredge of upper board. Ownership inscription to front pastedown in pencil dated 1930. Endpapers lightly toned and a little scattered foxing otherwise a clean copy in very good condition.
 
Detailed study of vulcanology focusing on the physiographical aspect of the subject including how the lava flow affects other rocks, with the photographic record as a key part of the study. The Author was an eye surgeon and a keen amateur vulcanologist and photographer; he was a member of the Royal Society commission to investigate the eruptions of the Soufriere Volcano and of Mount Pelee in 1902 and some of the images he took on the expedition form part of this volume. Scarce.
