Publishers’ decorative brown cloth with red cross on white panel to upper board. Cover cloth soiled, rubbed and bruised with wear to edges and corners. Ownership inscription to ffep in pencil; a few fingermarks to endpapers and textblock edge otherwise contents clean and bright. No annotation.
A diary kept during the South African War by a female army nurse, with insights into hospital conditions and battle practices at first-hand. Mrs Leather-Culley, of Fowberry Tower and Callaly Castle in Northumberland, later became the Commandant and Vice President of the Alnwick Branch of the Red Cross and unveiled the War Memorial there. Scarce - at time of writing no other copies could be found on sale.
