Undated, circa 1880. Revised Edition. Six volumes in three of Knight, plus Timbs volume bound to match. First volume: Volume I xx, [2], 444 pp bound with Volume II xviii, [2], 416. Second volume : Volume III xix, [3], 400 pp bound with Volume IV xix, [3], 400 pp. Third Volume: Volume V xxii, [2], 400 bound with Volume VI xxii, [2], 380 pp. Fourth Volume: Timbs vii, [3], 871, [1]. Steel engraved frontispiece and title page plus 3 further steel engraved plates to each Knight volume (making a total of 30 over the six) plus numerous engravings throughout to include decorative head & tail pieces; steel engraved frontispiece and title page plus five further steel engraved plates to Timbs. Book Condition: Very Good. Publisher's bevelled red cloth with titles and elaborate decoration in black and gilt to spine and upper board; blind stamped monogram and borders to lower board. Black endpapers. Spines uniformly lightly sunned and edges a little rubbed; inner hinges cracked but holding and Vol I slightly shaken. Sporadic foxing, mainly to textblock edge and to early & late leaves, otherwise contents clean and bright. No annotation or inscriptions. Classic works comprehensively covering the history and architecture of the capital city from earliest times, together with biographical material on important historical figures and histories of attractions and institutions. An outstandingly handsome set, particularly scarce in this binding.
