Publisher: Alex. Hogg, London;
Date of Publication: 1786
Stock Code: 5881

Folio, pp iv, 42, 180 full page plates (the majority with 2 illustrations to a page) with accompanying leaves of unpaginated text pp [454], and 50 engraved maps as called for, with [6] pp Index and List of Subscribers to rear. Lacking two leaves of text (pp 37-40, almost certainly never bound in) in the 42p preface. Full contemporary tan polished calf; maroon leather label with gilt titles to spine, and gilt decoration. Marbled endpapers. Hinges cracked but holding; small surface loss to upper board and head of spine. Ownership inscription in pencil to second free endpaper. Small nick to margin only of St Johns Gate plate and loss to text leaf Arwerton Hall approx 7” x 4”. A little offsetting and scattered foxing otherwise contents clean and tight.

Issued in parts, the collation of this work presents considerable problems due to the fact that "in order to render [it] more generally interesting, the several views will be published in a detached or promiscuous way, just as finished by the respective artists, which will enable the purchasers to arrange them as they judge best" (preface)! Thus the number of plates and their order in copies varies and the pagination is inventive to say the least. All of the letterpress in the body of the text however appears to be there with each of the county maps present with their corresponding leaves.
